Abstract: |
The evaluation, though limited in scale, produced valuable insights into the archaeological potential of the proposed development area. A patchwork of chalk floors was revealed in the main excavation area, and all appeared to have been truncated and were likely to have been of post-medieval date. The field to the west of the main development area appeared to have been extensively quarried. One area however, to the west end of the proposed access road, did appear to be relatively unaffected by recent quarrying. The evidence of a sunken building associated with some heat producing industrial process (as yet undated) and the remains of a wall foundation, possibly delineating the Abbey precinct, suggested that the archaeological potential in the area remained reasonably high.
