Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken across the foundation trenches, service trenches and pits excavated during the building extension of The Old Mill. This work was undertaken to fulfil a condition upon planning permission and followed earlier excavation across the site. One of the foundation trenches monitored revealed a number of horizons including a dark humic type soil which appeared to be an old land surface, and a number of more modern deposits. These were consistant with horizons revealed during earlier excavation. A second foundation trench revealed the original collapsed gravel infill of the revetment of the mill pond. This was south from the present day leat and overlay a silty alluvial deposit. A wooden plank was observed within the alluvium which almost certainly formed part of the 19th century timber revetment. A narrow service trench observed to the east of the 19th century porch revealed no aluvium, while a trench to the west of the porch revealed that the alluvium from the pond extended at least up to the corner of the existing building. The report concluded that the mill pond did originally extend beyond the 19th century extent and that there was good evidence to suggest the earlier pond did not extend beyond the line of the 19th century porch. No structures or artefacts were recovered to suggest that anything of significance associated with the Old Mill had survived to the west of the listed building and south of the mill leat. [Au(adp)]
