Abstract: |
Samuel Wilderspin, a pioneer of infant education in the early 19th century, contributed directly to the design of the infants' school built as part of the Queen Street National School in 1844. An important aspect for his design was the large amount of space allocated to the infants; playground and also its arrangement. Records from 1844 stated that the surface was metalled with gravel or shingle, lain on a soil or chalk levelling deposit. No plans survived of the original design, but later plans were suspected to be based on earlier drawings. An evaluation trench was excavated to locate surviving traces of the playground surface and perimeter flowerbeds, as well as a brick boundary wall predating the school, and investigation of deposits beyond the original school limits. Medieval boundary ditches identified west of the 19th century wall may have represented a medieval burgage plot boundary. The remains of an ornamental pond were found which may have been a feature of the 17th-18th century mansion gardens. Possible remains of playground surface were found. The archaeological deposits survived immediately beneath the playground surface. Groundworks in the playground would undoubtedly cause disturbance to archaeological remains. Prior archaeological investigations may be necessary to ensure full recording of any threatened areas. It was recommended that a detailed survey of the building, including fixture fittings should have been a priority prior to the finalisation of any scheme of refurbishment. [Au(abr)] |
