Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a retail development identified that it occupied the backlands of burgage tenements which fronted onto Bow Street. The proposed car park area occupied part of a former meadow, which had been divided from the town to the north by an embankment and watercourse, the Back River. On its south side, the meadow had been bordered by the River Parret. Archaeological evidence suggested that a crossing of the Parret had existed at the west end of Bow Street in the Roman period. Roman artefacts had also been found to the north-east. It was concluded that the main archaeological potential of the site lay in the possibility of evidence for medieval and post-medieval activity, and that the potential for wharves and moorings where the burgage plots abutted the Back River was of particular interest. It was noted that archaeological deposits at the site were unlikey to survive in a condition which warranted preservation in situ, due to recent disturbance. Recording of all standing structures considered to be of historical interest, and controlled topsoil stripping of the proposed store area under archaeological supervision, were recommended. [AIP] |
