Abstract:
An evaluation was undertaken in an area of a proposed residential development, on the site of a former farm. Features identified in Trench 1 included: an early trackway cut into the natural clay, overlain by an east-west ditch, cut by a brick pier of probable early post-medieval date, sealed by a cobbled surface associated with the late 18th to 20th century farmyard. Trench 2 contained a similar cobbled surface which overlaid the natural clay and was cut by two modern post-holes. Trench 3 also had a cobbled surface, probably contemporary with Trenches 1 and 2. A post-medieval brick culvert had been cut through the cobbles, below that was a late medieval/early post-medieval ditch and to the east was a flat-bottomed rectangular pit of possible early or middle Saxon date. Leather shoes and pottery of late 15th to 16th century date and medieval building material was recovered from the ditch fill in Trench 3. Trench 4 contained parallel ditches and modern pits, post holes and the remains of three large farm animals. [Au(adp)]
