Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in relation to a planning application for the development of the site. The study area was located in the centre of Chelmsford, comprising a roughly oval plot which had recently been used as allotments. It was bounded by a substantial railway embankment and housing on Upper Bridge Street and Seymour Street. The proposed development occupied part of the site of Wilkins, later Browns, brickworks. This was operational from the 1840s to c. 1902. The buildings within the proposed development possibly included the kiln, a wall, 'hacks', drying sheds, work sheds, storage facilities and a pug mill or washing pit. After the closure of the works the area was used for allotments. These remains were of archaeological significance, as little was known of the Essex brick industry and this type of industrial site. Further work should be focussed on the brickworks. It was possible that other archaeological remains may be encountered in the study area. Although the site lay outside of the known concentrations of prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and medieval activity it was possible that isolated remains of these dates may be present. They may however, have been damaged and/or destroyed by subsequent activity on the site, especially that associated with the brickworks. It was noted that the possibility that, as yet unknown, archaeological remains may be present within the study area could not be discounted. [Au(adp)]
