Abstract: |
The watching brief identified an extensive range of topographic and subsurface features, most of which were associated with the medieval salt industry. The results included six ditch systems that were used to filter and channel seawater in towards hearth areas, where it was evaporated by boiling to produce salt. Preliminary research into the form of this industry suggested that it differed from excavated evidence for saltern sites. There was also growing evidence that linked the industry with land reclamation, coastal grazing practices and coastal maritime trade along the south coast of Britain. [Au(abr)] |
