Abstract:
<summary>A watching brief/salvage recording on the line of the Blackstone to Astley section of Severn Trent Water's "Worcester Aqueduct" revealed evidence of late Neolithic activity in a field to the west of Longmore Hill Farm, Astley. The fills of the main feature recorded, an oval pit, contained layers of sand and charcoal. Finds included flint flakes (some burnt), a flint scraper, Beaker pottery, a hammer stone and burnt bone and pebbles. Environmental samples contained cereal grains, weeds of cultivation and hazel shells. Two further small oval features, both shallow and bowl-shaped, lay to the south of the pit. One of these intersected the pit; its fill was similar to the upper pit fill, and the relationship between the two was therefore uncertain. The finds from the pit fill were interpreted as domestic debris. At the time of discovery, only one other Beaker domestic site had been identified in the county (Midsummer Hill). {italon}Au {italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM11093
