Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a pipe trench, which passed close to the site of a prehistoric burnt mound. A deposit consisting of a spread of loam and charcoal with some pebble inclusions was observed, and a stake hole beneath the deposit was noted. The general consistency of the deposit did not appear to meet the criteria for identification as a burnt mound, although it was possible that the material lay at the edge of a deposit which had been spread by ploughing activity. A further feature, consisting of an area of black loam with ash charcoal and iron slag inclusions, was tentatively interpreted as a dump of post-medieval iron-working debris. [AIP] |
