Abstract: |
An archaeological appraisal was undertaken, as part of the EIA, of the proposed new industrial development. From the available cultural heritage research sources consulted, the proposal site appeared to have low archaeological potential. One site was identified within the area of the proposal site. This was the north-south orientated field boundary ditch RPS 12 that was probably post-medieval in origin and was not detailed on O.S. maps after 1956. However, there was some doubt as to when this enclosure may have taken place. The enclosure award for Birstall was made in 1760, but there was no known award for the Beaumont Leys area, though enclosure had undoubtedly taken place. Since neither parish was in existence before the 19th century and since the proposal site was located to the immediate north-east of the former boundary between the two parishes, the date of this ditch remained uncertain. The proposal would have an impact upon this site. The southern boundary of the proposal site was located along the line of a second enclosure field boundary that had survived. There may have been a potential impact upon this hedgerow boundary. The geotechnical trial pits located what appeared to be fairly heterogeneous upper glacial till deposits. It was possible that ploughing activity over a long period may have disturbed these subsoil deposits. The evidence from the wider study area may have indicated the potential of the proposal site. This assessment identified potential multi-period archaeological activity within the study area. Prehistoric flint scatters with material dating from the Mesolithic to the Early Bronze Age were located to the north-east, three findspots of Roman material and one of medieval artefacts were recorded. This hinted at multi-period activity within the proposal site and consequently there could be an impact upon such activity. The Iron Age occupation site and one medieval findspot could be perhaps discounted since the artefacts recovered may have originated from elsewhere and been redeposited at the site location.
