Abstract:		 Limited excavation by means of two small trenches was undertaken during the redevelopment of 49 - 73 Gigant Street in the north-west corner of Rolfe's Chequer, Salisbury. This produced evidence for the presence of a domestic building of medieval (probably 13th century) date in the form of a sequence of levelling layers and a chalk floor. At an early stage in the post-medieval period there was some internal modification of the structure, involving the insertion of two partition walls, but otherwise the scale of the investigations left the dimensions, orientation and plan of the building unknown. The structure did not occupy the whole of the Gigant Street frontage, however, part of which was occupied by a build-up of soil deposits and at least two (?cess) pits. Observation of piling and trenching activities elsewhere on the site produced no additional evidence for medieval activity; an apparently undifferentiated build-up of c.1m of soil across much of the backland contained few obvious finds but was likely to be of post-medieval to recent date.
