Abstract:
An occupation layer, which contained Beaker pottery, represented the earliest phase of activity on the site. A series of ditch systems which were excavated seemed to be largely datable within the early Roman period, although there were a number of features which contained Iron Age finds, and seemed to represent an earlier enclosure system, possibly related to two circular features. As well as the early Roman ditch systems, a large Roman aisled building was excavated and was thought to consist of at least two structural phases, both of which seemed to be associated with agricultural use. A number of the second phase post holes contained broken millstones, perhaps remnants of an earlier building function, and there were a number of gullies within the floor of the second phase, also possibly relating to the function of the structure. A number of features seemed to be associated with a phase when the building was no longer in use, most of which were field systems, which also related to the Roman period. A small number of post-medieval features were also identified, including field boundary ditches. [Au(adp)]
