Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken to provide information on the archaeological implications of groundworks associated with the proposed developments of the airfields facilities. Consultation of documentary and map-based archives indicted that the site lay in an area of considerable archaeological interest. The Gloucestershire SMR recorded an Anglo-Saxon burial within the affected area. In addition, the cropmarks of several putative archaeological features lay within the study area. The presence of numerous findspots, excavated settlement remains and cropmark complexes in the immediate vicinity of the airfield suggested that further, as yet unrecognised, archaeological remains may have survived within the study area. Lack of current knowledge was likely to have been a result of a lack of opportunity for archaeological research and conditions that were unpropitious for cropmarks to appear. [Au(abr)] |
