Abstract:		 Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent was granted for the excavation of two trial trenches to investigate the course of a moat believed to lie within the site. The Palace moat was located at two points, and its full width and depth established in this locality. None of the moat fills removed in excavation appeared to pre-date the early 19th century, and, indeed, both the Tithe Map and an estate map of 1829 showed the moat as an open feature. Fills of earlier post-medieval and medieval date presumably survived at lower levels where some waterlogged and anaerobic conditions had been proven through auguring. A recut of the upper sides of the moat was demonstrated in trench 2, apparently connected with the insertion of clay land drains and probably occurring sometime during the later 19th century.
