Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief during the groundwork for the construction of an extension to an existing appliance bay at Cirencester Fire Station, Chesterton Lane, Gloucestershire, was undertaken. The watching brief was carried out as a condition attached to planning permission granted by Cotswold District Council (CT3395/F). The work was recommended by the Senior Archaeological Officer of Gloucestershire County Council because of the location of the site immediately adjacent to Cirencester's Roman town defences. Monitoring recorded modern surfacing deposits overlying debris associated with the late 19th/20th century railway sidings, a former 19th century soil profile and clay forming the upper part of the geological deposits.
