Abstract: |
No. 143 Fore Street is the grandest of the very few early 18th-century houses to survive in the city centre. The house was constructed in 1714-1716 by the fuller Thomas Bury, who was knighted in 1708 and may well have built the house to reflect his new status. The recent refurbishment of the property revealed that although the house itself was a new build, much of the timber work of the house was reclaimed from earlier structures, whose character was consistant with a structure of 17th century date.[Au(abr)] |
