Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment was carried out in advance of the re-modelling of the Cooper Art Gallery in Barnsley. The gallery occupied a former school which had been founded in 1660 and rebuilt in the 18th century, and was said to have been situated within a churchyard. In the surrounding area, a number of sites and structures of archaeological interest had been recorded, including a medieval timber framed building, the sites of a medieval tithe barn and a former linen mill, the findspots of a Neolithic stone axe and two Roman coins, and a number of Listed Buildings. It was concluded that the Cooper Gallery was likely to have been built on the site of former medieval structures fronting onto Church Street, and on parts of their associated tenements. It was possible that burials could have been present. There was also potential for the survival of structural and landscape features associated with the 17th century school and its curtilage. [AIP] |
