Abstract: |
A desktop assessment and watching brief was undertaken in order to provide information on the archaeological implications of a proposed development. There were no known archaeological sites within the study area, excepting an 18th century farmhouse and 19th century windmill. Monitoring of geotechnical test-pits and bore holes revealed a Holocene stratigraphy of almost 10 metres depth sitting on top of Pleistocene sands and gravels and Triassic mudstone. The Holocene strata consisted predominantly of silts and clays of a blue grey colour relating to a middle to late Holocene marine transgression, but also included peats. The latter were found at depths of between 6.3 metres and 8.9 metres below ground surface and represented a period of lower sea levels than present. Several large fragments of wood were recovered from the peats, which along with other plant macro fossil data indicated that the environment during accumulation was probably a wooded marsh. [Au] |
