Abstract: |
Excavations were carried out in advance of redevelopment. The site lay immediately to the rear of Chester House, a listed (Grade II) late 17th century property, located to the southwest of the historic village centre. Excavation produced about 180 prehistoric struck flints, including both tools and waste flakes. Medieval potsherds, principally of 11th and 12th century date, formed a further significant group of finds. Both flints and pottery came largely from post-medieval contexts. The investigation also revealed a large part of the historic garden layout associated with Chester House itself. There were several phases, the first contemporary with the construction of the house (c.1680), the last dated to about 1740. [Au(abr)] |
