Abstract: |
During the course of the watching brief the upper sections of 23 geological test pits and boreholes were inspected. Archaeological interest was noted at five locations. The first location was just north of the River Taw where the ground had been made up in the post-medieavl period; charcoal and clay pipes from below the make-up layers suggested that archaeological remains may have survived in the area of Pottington Farm. The second location revealed organic soil horizons situated 2.5m below ground surface. Medieval pottery was found by the proposed road by the existing railway line. The fourth location is where peat and pottery were found at a depth of 1 metre. The fifth location was on the hillside where the test pits located a wide scatter of post-medieval pottery.[Au(abr)] |
