Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken as part of a redevelopment of the facilities at a leisure centre. The evaluation trench revealed a complex sequence of archaeological features and deposits. Evidence for three discrete phases of post built, or post and sill beam structures were recorded, one of which had a contemporary boundary ditch and fence. One phase of pitting, possibly for industrial use, was also recorded. In the post-medieval period two phases of brick buildings gave way to a boundary wall and path in the 19th century, followed by the changing rooms in the 20th century. A subsequent watching brief was also incorporated into this report and recorded a chalk foundation with abutting chalk surface, an adjacent chalk path and a similar chalk surface in a different area and one medieval pit. Other parts of the site revealed large medieval boundary ditches and two pits of uncertain date. [Au(adp)] |
