Abstract:
The assessment established that the main buildings of the former Franciscan Convent were designated as a Grade II Listed Building, as were parts of the precinct walls which adjoined the site. The original hospital was built as a hospital in 1772, but this was never completed due to lack of money. Franciscan nuns acquired it in 1807 and the buildings were subsequently extended over the next century. 19th century cartograhic evidence revealed formal gardens to the east of the buildings and vegetable gardens, orchards and meadows to the west. The area to the west of the buildings had been considerably altered. Possible arch marks and a denuded linear earthwork, which may be of archaeological interest, were noted to the east of the buildings. However, the potential for further sub-surface archaeological deposits was considered limited.[Au(abr)]
