Abstract: |
Two 2m square trial trenches were excavated at a potential development site comprising buildings and a small piece of open ground. Trench 1, beneath a basement slab, revealed a linear feature seen to cut natural gravel. No datable finds were recovered from the trench. Trench 2, located in the open space, exposed an east-west aligned stone, mortar and tile wall foundation. The evidence of the Westminster type tiles incorporated in the foundation suggested a late 13th or early 14th century construction date for the foundation. It was likely that the wall exposed belonged to a structure constructed in the northern part of the hospital precinct sometime after the initial 12th century construction phase. [Au(abr)] |
