Abstract:		 An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition attached to approval for the development of the site. The site did not contain any Listed Buildings or SAMs but lay within an Archaeological Priority Area, which was backed up by documentary, geological, archival and cartographic sources. Little evidence was known for Roman, Saxon or medieval occupation in the immediate vicinity but the site lay in an area well known as having potential for prehistoric archaeology. Whilst previous development activity would have had some impact on any archaeological remains it was likely to have been localised and therefore any such remains would have survived undisturbed over at least part of the site. It was noted however, that this area of Croydon underwent poorly documented periods of gavel extraction in the 19th century. AOC had demonstrated on other sites in the area that such processes had occurred, removing all or most potential archaeological deposits. Further archaeological mitigation of the site should be subject to the archaeological consideration of any existing or forthcoming geotechnical investigations. [Au(abr)]
