Abstract: |
Two of the evaluation trenches were situation within St. Hilda's graveyard, which had been truncated by the realignment of the Coronation Street and the construction of a dredge pumping station. A number of broken gravestones, pieces of grave furniture, and large quantities of disarticulated human bone were recovered from these trenches, indicating a high level of post-medieval disturbance. Fourteen graves were revealed in one of the trenches, relating to at least two phases of burial activity dating to the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. A single trench was excavated directly to the north of Mill Dam, which revealed the foundations of a substantial industrial structure and contaminated ground water below ground level. It was not possible to determine whether earlier archaeological features survived beneath these deposits. The majority of finds dated to the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. [Au(abr)] |
