Abstract: |
The southern boundary of the development site comprised a SAM; the Shorncliffe Battery Wall. This was part of a Napoleonic (late 18th or early 19th century) defensive system. The overall aim of the evaluation was to assess the presence or absence of any archaeological remains in general, and in particular to look for traces of the two flanking lines of gun emplacements which formed the other main parts of the Napoleonic battery. Saw-toothed walling was found, representing the remains of the cladding for the protective lozenge-shaped earthworks between the guns. Brick foundations for three gun mountings were also found. Possible traces of a protective wall between the two lines of guns were noted. The foundations of the laundry building of a19th century Female Hospital were located. [Au(abr)] |
