Abstract: |
Six archaeological trial trenches, comprising approx. 2% sample of the site, were excavated in advance of proposed development of a bus lane and balancing pond on a narrow strip of land to the north of Cardigan Road. The area investigated lay within the floodplain of the River Great Ouse in an area of historic water meadow, now a local nature reserve. Archaeological features, comprising pits, ditches and a relict palaeochannel, were excavated and clearly sealed by the alluvium. Spread over an area measuring 200m at the eastern end of the site the overall character of the features suggested a medieval farm or small nucleated settlement. These features were also waterlogged and contained preserved organic material. [Au(adp)] |
