Abstract: |
The assessment is concentrated on 1-3 Ludgate Square, which was formerly occupied by a brick-built warehouse which was burnt down in 1990, during refurbishment. The fragmentary remains of the warehouse were still Grade II Listed. Archaeological work on site during 1989-90 proved that archaeological deposits below the existing basement floor consist of truncated features dug into natural brickearth. The early Norman period (c. 1080-1000), was the most interesting in the sites history, when a fortress known as Montfichet's Tower was constructed there. The site lay within the eastern part of the fortress, which was believed to be the site of the tower or keep, which was probably constructed on a large motte, made out of material from the large ditches surrounding the fortress. The western area of the fortress and its ditches were extensively excavated during 1986-90. The part wall between 1-3 Ludgate Square and 56 Carter Lane, contained historic fabric of 16th and 17th century date. Given the extent of information already available on the site, it was not considered necessary to carry out any further programme of archaeological evaluation, unless it was to be to confirm the presence or absence of archaeological deposits in specific locations.
