Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment revealed that unlike other sites that have been archaeologically investigated in the general area, the rear plots of "Holtwood" and "The White Cottage" were not thought to have been truncated by post-medieval or post-war developments. Since the late medieval period the site (part of Buckland Down) appears to have been given over to woodland/plantation. Tree roots will have disturbed any superficial or shallow archaeological deposits or features, but was possible that prehistoric features, for example, may survive at depth. No medieval settlement sites were recorded in the immediate vicinity, although the alignment of Plymbridge Road may have been of medieval origin. Based on the available evidence, the archaeological potential of the site was considered to be relatively low despite remaining undeveloped into the 20th century. [Au(abr)] |
