Abstract:
An evaluation trench revealed that much of the land to the rear of 13 and 14 Barton Street had suffered significant disturbance by modern and post-medieval activity. At the southern end of the evaluation trench, the base of foundations of former brick structures reached depths affecting the upper reaches of deposits that may have preserved earlier remains. No such remains were identified within the evaluation trench. In the central and northern areas of the trench, two large late 18th to 19th century pits extended down into the gravel, removing earlier deposits. A 0.7m wide strip of undisturbed ground on the line of the former property boundary between these pits revealed no evidence of medieval or earlier remains. Logistical limitations prevented investigation below their uppermost level of likely survival. The pits extended at least 3m north-south and continued for an unknown distance beyond the western, eastern and northern limits of the evaluation trench. [Au(abr)]
