Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken across the site in order to fulfil a condition for planning permission for the redevelopment of the site. The site lay to the south of Cross Street and was bounded by Windsor Street to the east and Chapel Street to the south-west. Three trenches, which showed the site to have been truncated by 19th and 20th century activity, were excavated. A series of 18th century rubbish pits and two ditches were recorded. These were probably associated with the activities that took place to the rear of properties facing onto Windsor Street. No evidence of prehsitoric or medieval activity was recorded and it was therefore thought that this area was common land until the post-medieval period. [Au(adp)]
