Abstract: |
The watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a small area for an external stairwell access to the cellars of a Grade II* Listed Building. The core of the building dated from c.1600, although a priory had been established at the site in the 13th century. During the watching brief, it was found that the new opening coincided with the position of a former doorway into the cellars, which had been lost. Evidence suggested that the doorway had been infilled and, perhaps later, re-used as a window opening. Two short walls to allow for drainage had enclosed a small area outside the window. [AIP] |
