Abstract: |
The vault contained within the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (193) and it was damaged by the construction of a fence. Two test pits were excavated to determine the extent of the damage. The two pits revealed that post holes measuring 300mm at the top and tapering inwards as they went down had been cut into the 1960's concrete covering the vault roof of 94 High Street. These contained metal fence posts. It was impossible to excavate these holes to their full depth but they probably reached the vault roof beneath the concrete. Examination of the inside of the vault areas of damage spaced at regular intervals reflecting the positioning of the posts. The concrete cap, therefore, no longer protected the vault roof from the influx of water. [Au(abr)] |
