Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken of the breaking up and removal of a concrete slab and the excavation of a footing trench. The removal of the concrete revealed an accumulated dark soil occupation layer c.20cms deep. Peg tile and fragments of shallow hand made brick were collected from this layer together with animal bones and a small moulded sherd of Staffordshire stoneware dating to the 18th-19th century; there was no evidence of Victorian or later material. A small sondage excavated through the occupation layer close to the rear of the shop struck a surface of flint cobbles. These were 60cms below the level of the present washroom floor. The trench dug for a new footing cut through a number of level soil horizons that were recorded in the section drawing. The cobbles seen in the earlier sondage were not present here but a cut feature was observed in both sections of the trench. This was interpreted as a N-S slot, and was filled with packed clay and a clean mortar rubble. The slot was sealed below the horizon below the C18th-early C19th occupation debris layer and may have been the robbed footing of an earlier building. [Au(abr)]
