Abstract: |
The report concluded that the area of chalk downs to the south of Royston which the site was located within had a high potential for surviving prehistoric remains as was shown by the numerous monuments and cropmarks at Therfield Heath , Whitely Hill and several locations between. Given that the development site was adjacent to Ermine Street and that a reasonable number of Roman finds had been recorded in the Royston area, there was a possiblility that Roman roadside activity would be encountered. The development site appeared to have always been outside of the core of Royston and was in fact probably on the edges of common field in the north of Royston parish during the medieval and post-medieval periods.
