Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken of a site immediately east of All Saints churchyard in the centre of Rothbury, a designated Conservation Area. Two 1 sq. m. evaluation trenches were opened next to the street frontage wall, either side of the yard entrance. The first, in the south-west corner of the site, was excavated through natural, well-sorted sand to a depth of 1.2m and revealed no features of archaeological significance. The second was excavated to a depth of 0.35m into boulder clay and was also devoid of features or finds of archaeological relevance. It was concluded that the Haw Hill site probably did not contain surviving features or deposits of archaeological significance, any such remains having been removed by recent episodes of demolition, construction and drainage works.
