Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a new sewerage system. The village and environs contained several earthworks which probably related to the medieval or post-medieval village and adjacent field systems. A rapid walkover survey of the pipe route was undertaken, which showed it to contain extensive ridge-and-furrow. This was surveyed using an EDM, supplemented by the plotting of a wider area from air photographs. Two fragments of green glazed pottery were located from spoil at the pumping stations site: parts of a handle from a 13th to 14th century jug. A single feature was located along the pipeline route. It was undated, but lay beneath the buried soil of the ridge-and-furrow, so a medieval or earlier date was probable. No village remains were identified along the route, either from surface indications or during stripping, suggesting that the area had always been within the open fields of the village. [Au(abr)] |
