Abstract: |
Evaluation trenches were excavated at the site. The vast majority of the archaeology dated to the late Romano-British period; this was in contrast to the early Roman activity encountered on earlier evaluations in the development area. Ditches forming paddocks and structural features comprising a wall foundation and a beam slot were noted. Above the foundation were three limestone blocks sealed by a burnt layer containing seeds. Three pits associated with domestic activity were also identified. Two large palaeochannels/ponds from this period were also recorded. A layer of intermittent cobbles and a potential post hole were dated to the Middle Saxon period and a ditch and buried soil horizon were dated to the medieval period. [Au(abr)] |
