Abstract: |
Despite the archaeological potential of the site, being on the southern edge of the known medieval and post-medieval settlement of Macclesfield, the watching brief demonstrated that later development and disturbance in the area had largely removed all evidence for earlier use of the site. A few isolated pockets of earlier plough or garden soil were preserved on the slope down to Bollin, however, and these produced a small quantity of pottery dating from the medieval and early post-medieval periods. This limited evidence would support the theory that this area lay on the edge of the settlement and was most likely occupied by fields or small gardens during the medieval period. [Au(abr)] |
