Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken ahead of an application to extract coal from the site. There was no evidence revealed during the work for prehistoric or Romano-British activity at the site or in its immediate environs. Documentary sources indicated that the principal historical interest in the site was in the late medieval and post-medieval coal mining and associated industrial activity. There was no documentary evidence for surface features related to mining or other activity within the site boundary, neither were there any surface traces. Ridge and furrow covered most of the site but this was of nineteenth century date and of local importance only. It was recommended that no further archaeological investigation of the site was warranted at that stage. [Au(adp)] |
