Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site as flats for the elderly. The level and character of the regional ground surface was difficult to ascertain, mainly because of the extent of 'made ground' within the site, particularly on the south site. Whilst it was not anticipated that substantial Roman deposits would have survived here it was possible that isolated cut-features could have been present. Defensive works associated with Civil War activities could also have been located, although none were documented specifically within the site. Any putative defensive line linking the strong points of the Wynard's Almshouses and the Magdalen Hospital could have passed through the site and may have been sufficiently deep to survive later disturbance.
