Abstract: |
A desk-based study of land around Old Sarum, the site of an Iron Age hillfort, Roman town of Sorviodunum, an early medieval settlement and a Norman fortified town (SAM Wiltshire 001), was undertaken to assess the archaeological implications of proposed development of a visitors centre to the north side of the monument. Although few archaeological features were detected in the proposal area itself (linear soil marks probably being the remains of a prehistoric field system), the clustering of features around it suggested that there was a high potential for archaeological features extending into the proposal area.
