Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out as part of the proposed restoration of the gardens of Highcliffe Castle. The evaluation was undertaken to identify the layout of woodland paths dating from at least the 19th century, and to test the level of survival of a 19th century parterre or formal garden feature. The paths were identified as being constructed of gravel, filling flat-bottomed trenches and the layout of the main paths was identified. The original parterre was seen to survive though its original layout may have been slightly obscured by an attempt to reconstruct the area in the 1980s. [Au] |
