Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during the installation of cabling for external floodlighting. Of the present church only the 15th century tower predated the rebuilding of the nave and chancel in the 19th century. The groundworks comprised the excavation by contractors of four points around the church up to a depth of 450mm, to facilitate the drilling of four holes through the external wall foundation for the floodlight cabling. Internal excavation was avoided by the use of drilling, while external excavation was ultimately limited to three points. A small number of nails, lead waste were found in the contractors spoil heap on the south side of the south aisle. No structural remains or deposits relating to earlier phases of church activity were found on the site during the groundwork. The relatively shallow nature of the groundwork limited the destructive impact upon any archaeological deposits around the church. [Au(abr)] |
