Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken of the opening up of a series of trenches inside and outside of the pavilion on the south-east corner of the late 18th century house. The contractors responsible for driving piles had noticed that they were encountering resistance to the penetration around the base of the north wall of the eastern half of the pavilion. Pieces of broken masonry, brick and lime mortar were coming up in the pile trenches both inside and outside of the building. Several 'key hole' trenches cut for the purpose of assessing this resistance established that a substantial wall footing lay within the building, running parallel with the north wall but beneath the earth fill beneath the modern floor level. Two shorts lengths of return wall running away from either end of this footing towards the house confirmed the north-east and south-east corners of this buildings. Documentary evidence was limited but suggested that these were the remains of the Orangery built soon after the completion of the house in 1781 and demolished following Campbell's acquisition of Buscot Park in 1859. Little was known about this building and the discovery of these remains at least gave some indication about its size and location in relation to the present house. [Au(abr)] |
