Abstract: |
Trial excavations were undertaken on the site of the former rope works, situated within the Beckside and Grovehill suburb of medieval Beverley. Previous archaeological excavations in the area had demonstrated that extensive medieval and post-medieval remains survived to the west, south and east of the rope works site. Two trenches were found to contain surviving archaeological remains of medieval date. Earliest of these was a north/south boundary ditch which would have served to define plots of land running back from the lane, fragments of 12th century pottery, roof tile and iron slag were revealed from the ditch. In the central part of the site a number of 19th century features were recorded, which were interpreted as possible horticultural cultivation beds and were associated with the growing of mint. Features relating to the rope works were also revealed in the form of building foundations and the bases of heavy machinery. [Au(adp)] |
