Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of a pipe trench. No structural remains or identifiable archaeological features were encountered. Despite this, archaeological evidence of varying potential was uncovered by the watching brief. Grave-earth was present in most of the trench. Further contexts exposed included ten graves, several smaller post-medieval layers, an existing pipe trench and two brick soakaways. A wide range of artefacts were recovered from the grave-earth including prehistoric pottery and heat affected stones, these possibly represented the earliest evidence of settlement activity in the village predating the church by at least a millennium.
