Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an extension to a school, which lay close to a medieval church, and near a site where medieval features and artefacts had been excavated. During the evaluation, four sherds of 5th-7th century pottery and a Neolithic or Bronze Age worked flint core were recovered. Post-medieval metalled surfaces, likely to have represented renewals of the school playground surface, were also identified. An absence of topsoil beneath these surfaces suggested that the area may have been levelled, and archaeological deposits therefore removed, at the time of the school's construction. [AIP] |
