Abstract: |
The maritime project carried out extensive research on the Great Storm of 1901 and this report synthesized some of the findings. During research to find new wrecks, Ian Spokes discovered 12 sinkings on the 12th and 13th November 1901 on the north-east coast due to the Great Storm. Further research showed that at least 41 named wrecks and four unknowns were lost between Berwick and Skinningrove in the storm, with at least 155 seafarers drowned locally. At least 63 other ships were lost around the UK in this storm, with the loss of at least 75 other seafarers drowned. The wreck of the "Inga" was found at the mouth of the river Tyne and the wreck of the "Quillota" near Sunderland. It was the last multiple wrecking on the east coast. [Au(adp)] |
