Abstract: |
The evaluation comprised the excavation of eleven trenches and the observation of the excavation of geotechnical test-pits. A palaeochannel was recorded in the southwest part of the site. Ploughsoil dated to the medieval period was recorded in the northeast part of the site. Alluvial deposits which were undated but could have been post-medieval or medieval in origin were recorded in the western part of the site. These deposits may have been the result of flooding of the nearby Counters Creek. Probable 18th century walls were revealed that may have been associated with Stanley House (a Grade II Listed Building) or the precursors to Chelsea College. Dumped deposits and isolated features probably of the 18th/19th century associated with the grounds of Stanley House were also recorded. [AIP] |
